Running out of time on SAT Reading? Feeling overwhelmed by dense passages, tricky vocabulary, or confusing answer choices? In this post, I share my top 8 SAT Reading strategies that helped me score a 1590 on the SAT and that I teach my students to boost their SAT English scores. You’ll learn how to break reading passages into manageable chunks, annotate dense texts, spot trap answers, and stay precise with every choice. I also cover how to handle poems, tricky names, and adverbs of degree so you can tackle any question confidently. These proven SAT Reading tips can help you improve your timing, accuracy, and comprehension—whether your goal is a 700+, 750+, or even a perfect 800.

If SAT Reading feels impossible, you’re not alone. I wasn’t naturally strong in English either. Dense passages, confusing answer choices, and limited time made the section overwhelming. But with the right strategies, it becomes manageable—and even enjoyable.

💡 Strategy 1: Split Passages into Two Blocks

One of the biggest challenges on SAT Reading is staying focused for long stretches. I like to break passages into two separate blocks.

Additionally, I start at the end of the English module and work backward, tackling the easier “craft and structure” passages first. Then I handle the words-in-context questions separately. Splitting the reading like this gives your brain a chance to recharge, so you stay sharp all the way through the section.

💡 Strategy 2: Use Initials for Hard Names

Many SAT passages include names that are difficult to pronounce. The College Board does this intentionally to interrupt your flow. Don’t get hung up on pronunciation. Instead, assign initials to the people in the passage and keep moving. This simple trick helps you maintain focus and avoid unnecessary confusion.

💡 Strategy 3: Find Three Wrong Answers

The SAT is full of trap answers. Instead of searching for the single right choice, try looking for three wrong ones. By eliminating the answers that are clearly incorrect, the correct option often becomes obvious.

This approach goes against traditional school test-taking habits, but it’s a powerful way to increase accuracy while saving time.

💡 Strategy 4: Find Synonyms between Answer Choices and Text

SAT Reading tests literal comprehension, not personal interpretation. When analyzing answer choices, look for synonyms or rephrased sentences rather than trying to think “outside the box.” Often, passages are intimidating, but the correct answer is right there if you focus on what the text literally says.

💡Strategy 5: Pay Attention to Adverbs of Degree

Words like “partly,” “primarily,” or “significantly” can make or break an answer choice. These adverbs tell you how strong or weak a statement is.

On the SAT, precision matters. Choosing an answer with a stronger or weaker adverb than the passage suggests can turn a correct answer into a trap. Paying attention to these small words will save you from careless mistakes.

💡 Strategy 6: Annotate Dense Passages

Some passages, especially science texts, are packed with information. Annotating helps organize and compare ideas. I often use a simple T-chart to track studies, species, or variables. This method allows me to quickly see differences and conclusions, making it easier to process complex material without getting overwhelmed.

💡Strategy 7: Go with Emotional/Thematic Impact of Poems

Poems can feel intimidating, but focusing on the literal meaning can lead you astray. Instead, I read for the emotional or thematic message. Look at what the speaker is feeling and what the text conveys emotionally. This approach helps you answer questions about the poem’s purpose without getting lost in metaphors or figurative language.

💡 Strategy 8: Be Precise With Answers

Precision is key, especially for high scorers. If a passage gives one reason for something, don’t pick an answer that talks about multiple reasons. Always double-check that your choice matches the passage exactly. Combining this with the “find three wrong answers” strategy ensures accuracy while saving time.

⏰ Final Thoughts

Improving SAT Reading isn’t about reading faster or magically understanding every passage on the first try. It’s about having a clear plan and knowing exactly how to approach each question type. When you rely on strategy instead of instinct, the section becomes far less intimidating and much more predictable.

For those who want to dive even deeper, my SAT English self-paced course covers additional strategies for every type of passage and question, giving you the tools to dominate SAT Reading confidently.
