The 2022-2023 school year is in full swing and students are now faced with their first exams of the year. The “easy days” of learning names and class routines are now behind them. Faced with the increasing rigor and challenges, students may start to fall behind and need additional support.
If your son or daughter tells you they are struggling in a particular class, getting them 1-on-1 tutoring as soon as possible is one of the best things you can do as a parent. Waiting to see if it resolves on its own is risky: courses are typically cumulative and get progressively more difficult as the year goes on. If you wait to see their first or second report card , chances are your child’s confidence and grades will already have been compromised.
Why is 1-on-1 tutoring so effective? Below, I highlight 10 compelling reasons to utilize 1-on-1 tutoring for your child:
1. Individual Attention for Customized Learning
Your child will receive an individualized learning experience he or she can’t get in a classroom setting. In a 1-on-1 setting, tutors get to know the students’ individual learning styles and can adapt their teaching methods accordingly. These customized lessons resonate best with the student and can deepen their understanding of the complex content they are learning in class.
2. Improves academic performance
Tutoring will prepare your child for tests and exams, while tutors work with your child on specific problem areas. Your child’s grades and understanding of the subject will significantly improve when working with a tutor. This is especially important in high school when grades factor into an overall GPA, a major factor weighing into college admissions’ decisions.
3. Improves attitude towards learning and school
With the right tutor, learning can become fun for your child. With constant encouragement and praise, your child will feel less overwhelmed or frustrated with school.
4. Increased self-efficacy and confidence
Your child’s self-esteem and confidence will increase, by providing them with the resources and skills they need to excel in school. It is the “snowball effect:” when a student starts to see success, they will believe in themselves more and will generate more success as a result.
5. Develops study skills
Through tutoring, your child will learn work and study habits they can utilize throughout their lifetime. These skills will help prepare your child to successfully achieve his or her goals both inside and outside of the classroom.
6. Provides an optimal learning environment
Tutoring provides an environment free of distractions, with fewer students and disruptions around so your child is better able to focus on learning.
7. Encourages the freedom to ask questions
At school, your child may not always feel comfortable asking questions in front of his or her peers. Students do not like to admit that they do not know something. Sometimes, they may feel like the only one in the room that doesn’t understand (which, we know is not true). Tutoring will help teach your child to be comfortable asking questions, big or small, without feeling self-conscious.
8. Improves time management skills
Your child will become more competent in completing their assignments on time and more successful in managing their school work.
9. Challenges those who need it
Meeting with a well-qualified tutor helps high fliers, who may be bored with the pace of the class, stretch their thinking and try things beyond of their “zone of proximal development,” which is the zone where students feel academically comfortable and capable.
10. Prepares your child for college
Through tutoring, your child will not only maintain a higher GPA that will position them as more competitive college applicants, but they will also learn invaluable time management and study skills that they can utilize in their college courses. Who knows - your child may even develop a passion for the subject they are being tutored in and decide to pursue it in college!
