September SAT Predictions: 10 Question Types to Review Before Test Day

The September SAT is almost here, which means students everywhere are entering that very specific stage of test prep where every unfamiliar question suddenly feels like a personal attack.


So, what should you actually review before September 12?


I put together 10 predictions for the September SAT based on patterns we’ve been seeing across recent official tests and the newest College Board Question Bank material. These are not leaked questions, and I have not seen the September SAT. Standardized tests are simply repetitive by design, and after 20 years of coaching the SAT—and having our team sit for official Digital SATs—you start to recognize the patterns.


All of the questions featured in the video come from the newest batch of College Board Question Bank questions. Even if these exact questions do not appear on your test, the underlying skills are exactly the kinds of things I would want fresh in my mind before the SAT.

🔮 Prediction 1: A Boundaries Question With “That”


In biology, many initially disordered systems will naturally move toward greater order according to the principle of self-organization, a conceptual framework for pattern _____ biologists believe can be used to explain a range of organic phenomena, from population dynamics to the sociality of bees and ants.


Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?

A. formation, that some

B. formation. Some

C. formation that some

D. formation; some


The first prediction in the set is a classic SAT boundaries question.


⭐️ What this question is really testing

When punctuation changes from answer choice to answer choice, College Board is usually testing whether you understand the structure of the sentence, not whether you know some obscure punctuation rule.


Here, the important phrase is: formation that some biologists believe...

The clause beginning with that is essential to the meaning of the noun phrase before it, so it should flow directly from formation without punctuation.


Answer: C


⭐️ Why students miss it

Students tend to over-punctuate long SAT sentences because the sentence feels complicated. But complexity is not a reason to add a comma.


A useful pattern to remember is:

which often introduces nonessential information and may be preceded by a comma.

that usually introduces essential information and usually is not.


There are exceptions, so grammar should never become pure memorization, but this is a very useful starting point.


⭐️ What to recognize on test day

If you see answer choices containing a period, semicolon, comma, and no punctuation, immediately ask: Do I actually have two complete sentences here?


That question will usually eliminate choices faster than rereading the passage four times.



🔮 Prediction 2: Coordinate Geometry Without Doing All the Coordinate Geometry


A rectangle is formed by the four points shown on the coordinate plane.


What is the area, in square units, of the rectangle?


The original question gives the four vertices graphically.








⭐️ What this question is really testing

At first glance, this looks like a coordinate-geometry marathon. It is not. You need the area of a rectangle, which means you only need: length × width


The trap is allowing the tilted figure to convince you that you need some elaborate geometric construction. You do not. Use Desmos to calculate the distances between adjacent vertices, which gives side lengths of 5 and 10.


Answer: 50


⭐️ Why this matters

Students sometimes think calculator shortcuts are somehow less legitimate than doing the math manually. On the Digital SAT, that mindset can cost you time. The question is testing whether you can find the dimensions of the rectangle. If Desmos can calculate those distances accurately in seconds, there is no reason to spend a minute writing out the distance formula twice.


The skill is not just knowing formulas. It is knowing when not to use them.


⭐️ What to recognize on test day

When a coordinate geometry problem gives you several points, ask: What measurement do I actually need?


You may only need one distance, one slope, or one intersection—not every possible property of the figure.



🔮 Prediction 3: Quadratics and Real Solutions


r² + qr = 2r − 55


In the given equation, q is an integer constant. The equation has no real solutions.


What is the largest possible value of q?


This is the quadratic pattern discussed in Prediction 3 of the video.


⭐️ What this question is really testing

Whenever the SAT combines:

  • a quadratic equation,

  • a variable constant,

  • and language about the number of real solutions,

you should immediately think: What is happening at the x-axis?


A quadratic with:

  • two x-intercepts has two real solutions,

  • one x-intercept has one real solution,

  • no x-intercepts has no real solutions.

That means you can use the discriminant—or you can let Desmos show you the exact same concept visually.


Using a slider for q, the largest integer value that keeps the parabola away from the x-axis is:


Answer: 16


⭐️ Why I like the Desmos approach here

You absolutely should know that the discriminant is: b² − 4ac


But this is a perfect example of the difference between knowing math and taking the SAT efficiently. If Desmos allows you to see the threshold value immediately, use it.


For students targeting high scores, the biggest benefit may not even be getting this question right. It is getting it right quickly enough that you have more time for the monster waiting at Question 21.



🔮 Prediction 4: Triangle Similarity and the Ambiguous Case


For triangles ABC and FGH, angles B and G each measure 51°, the length of AB is 6, and the length of FG is 18. Which additional piece(s) of information is/are sufficient to prove that triangle ABC is similar to triangle FGH?


I. The measure of angle A is equal to the measure of angle F.

II. The measure of angle C is equal to the measure of angle H.

III. The length of FH is 3 times the length of AC.


A. I is sufficient, II is sufficient, and III is sufficient.

B. I is sufficient and II is sufficient, but III is not.

C. II is sufficient and III is sufficient, but I is not.

D. III is sufficient, but I is not and II is not.


⭐️ What this question is really testing

The math here is not especially advanced.

The difficulty comes from keeping track of:

  • corresponding angles,

  • proportional sides,

  • and three separate Roman numeral conditions.

This is why my first recommendation is simple: Draw the triangles.


Put every piece of known information directly on your sketch. Statements I and II each give enough angle information to prove similarity. Statement III creates an SSA, or Side-Side-Angle, situation. That is the ambiguous case.


Answer: B


⭐️ Why students get caught

Students often remember a giant list of acronyms: SSS. SAS. ASA. AAS. SSA. Then everything begins to blend together under pressure. The one I want you to recognize immediately is: SSA = danger. Knowing two sides and a non-included angle does not necessarily determine a unique triangle.


⭐️ What to recognize on test day

If College Board gives you a triangle proof with Roman numerals, do not try to solve all three mentally. Draw it. Then evaluate I, II, and III one at a time.



🔮 Prediction 5: The Subject Might Be an Entire Phrase


That the expansionist appetites of colonial European powers had their sights set on his country was evident to Siam’s King _____ deterring those ambitions through international diplomacy and domestic reform was perhaps his foremost achievement.Though his reign ended roughly twenty years before Siam became known by its modern name of Thailand, King Chulalongkorn is often credited with ushering the nation into modernity.


Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?

A. Chulalongkorn;

B. Chulalongkorn that

C. Chulalongkorn,

D. Chulalongkorn


The prediction set labels this question “Subject is a Phrase.”


⭐️ What this question is really testing

Students are trained to hunt for a one-word subject. That works until College Board gives you a subject that is an entire clause. The first half of this sentence already contains a complete thought, and the phrase beginning with deterring those ambitions functions as the subject of the second complete thought.


So the sentence needs punctuation capable of separating two independent clauses.


Answer: A


⭐️ Why this question feels harder than it is

Long SAT grammar sentences create visual intimidation.

There may be:

  • names,

  • historical context,

  • prepositional phrases,

  • modifiers,

  • and several dozen words between the important grammatical pieces.


But grammar is still grammar. Your job is to strip the sentence down until you can answer:

What is the subject?

What is the verb?


If both sides of the blank contain a complete subject-verb structure, you need a true sentence boundary.



🔮 Prediction 6: Circle Equations and the Radius Trap


In the xy-plane, circle M is the graph of: (x − 4)² + (y − 5)² = 9. Circle P has the same center as circle M but has a radius that is twice the radius of circle M.


Which equation represents circle P?

A. (x − 4)² + (y − 5)² = 18

B. (x − 4)² + (y − 5)² = 36

C. (x − 8)² + (y − 10)² = 9

D. (x − 8)² + (y − 10)² = 18


⭐️ What this question is really testing

The standard equation of a circle is: (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r²

Two parts matter:

  • (h, k) determines the center.

  •  determines the radius.


The problem says the center stays the same, so the expressions inside the parentheses should not change. The original equation has: r² = 9, so the radius is 3. Doubling the radius gives 6, and the new equation therefore contains: 6² = 36


Answer: B


⭐️ The trap College Board wants you to fall into

They want you to see 9, double it to 18, and move on. But 9 is not the radius. It is the radius squared.


This is why formula knowledge matters beyond memorization. You need to understand what every part of the formula represents.



🔮 Prediction 7: A Shifting Transition


Scala is referred to as a compiled programming language because it typically incorporates a compiler—a tool that translates lines of code into executable commands. Compiling isn’t exclusive to certain programming _____ any language can incorporate this tool.


Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?

A. languages. However,

B. languages; however,

C. languages, however,

D. languages, however;


⭐️ What this question is really testing

Transition questions are becoming less about simply knowing that however = contrast. College Board can also test whether you know which sentence the transition belongs to. Here, the idea that compiling is not exclusive to certain programming languages is what contrasts with the previous statement.


That means however belongs with that thought.


Answer: D


⭐️ Why placement matters

Students frequently treat a transition as if it floats between two sentences. It does not. A transition belongs grammatically to one sentence while explaining that sentence's relationship to the idea before it.


So when you see however, therefore, moreover, or another transition in several different positions, ask: Which idea is this word introducing?


That is often the fastest way to find the correct placement.



🔮 Prediction 8: Equivalent Expressions in Desmos


The expression (29x + 102) / [x(x + 51)] is equivalent to p/x + w/(x + 51), where p and w are constants.


What is the value of w?


⭐️ What this question is really testing

Equivalent-expression questions often look like an invitation to do a lot of fraction algebra.

You can. But you may not need to. If two expressions are truly equivalent, they produce the same graph wherever both expressions are defined.


So enter both expressions into Desmos, create sliders for the unknown constants, and adjust them until the graphs overlap. That gives:


Answer: 27


⭐️ Why this strategy is valuable

Partial fractions and common denominators are perfectly valid mathematics.

But they also create multiple opportunities for:

  • sign mistakes,

  • distribution errors,

  • denominator errors,

  • and wasted time.


On the Digital SAT, students should become comfortable asking: Can I test equivalence instead of proving it manually?


That question can save a surprising amount of time.



🔮 Prediction 9: Pronoun Matching


When a given term—“self-fulfilling prophecies” and “role models” are two well-known examples—is generally accepted and frequently used, _____ susceptible to obliteration by incorporation (OBI). In cases of OBI, widely used terms are rarely, if at all, attributed to the individuals who coined them.


Which choice completes the text so that it conforms to the conventions of Standard English?

A. they often become

B. these often become

C. this often becomes

D. it often becomes


⭐️ What this question is really testing

Pronoun questions become much easier once you identify exactly what noun the pronoun is replacing. The distracting phrase between the dashes contains plural nouns: self-fulfilling prophecies

and: role models


Those words are designed to tempt you toward a plural pronoun. But they are only examples. The actual subject is: a given term


That is singular. So the matching pronoun must also be singular.


Answer: D — it often becomes


⭐️ This is a very SAT-like trap

College Board loves putting a plural noun closer to the blank than the actual subject. Do not match a pronoun to the nearest noun. Match it to the noun it actually represents.


If a sentence contains information between dashes or parentheses, temporarily remove that information and reread the grammatical skeleton. Suddenly, what looked complicated often becomes obvious.



🔮 Prediction 10: Conditional Probability


For 100 buttons, the table summarizes the distribution by group and diameter:

One of these buttons will be selected at random. What is the probability of selecting a button with a diameter that is less than or equal to 30 millimeters, given that it is not in group 2? (Express your answer as a decimal or fraction, not as a percent.)


⭐️ What this question is really testing

Conditional probability questions are mostly about one idea: Your denominator changes.

The phrase: given that it is not in Group 2

means Group 2 is no longer part of the possible outcomes.


There are 65 buttons outside Group 2, and 62 of those have a diameter of 30 millimeters or less.


Answer: 62/65


⭐️ Why students miss conditional probability

Students often correctly count the desired outcomes but keep using the original total of 100. That ignores the condition. The word given should immediately trigger this question: What is my new universe?


Once you redefine the sample space, the probability itself is usually easy.


⭐️ What These September SAT Predictions Have in Common

These questions cover grammar, geometry, algebra, probability, and Desmos, but they are actually testing many of the same higher-level SAT skills.


⭐️ Recognize the structure before doing the work

A strong SAT student does not just know more math or grammar. They identify the question type faster. They see: “no real solutions”

and think: quadratic + x-intercepts or discriminant.

They see: “given that”

and think: conditional probability + new denominator.

They see: a circle equation

and immediately remember: the number on the right is r².


That recognition is what turns a 90-second question into a 30-second question.



🔥 Do not let difficult-looking questions dictate your method

One of the biggest themes in these predictions is that a question's appearance can be misleading.

A tilted rectangle does not necessarily require complicated geometry.

A giant grammar sentence may reduce to two simple independent clauses.

An ugly algebraic expression may be dramatically easier in Desmos.

A probability table may only require eliminating one row.

College Board frequently makes familiar concepts look unfamiliar.

Your job is to simplify them.



🔥 Desmos should be part of your SAT Math strategy


Several of these predictions have perfectly valid by-hand solutions. That does not mean the by-hand method is always the best test-day method. The Digital SAT gives every student access to Desmos.


Learn how to use:

  • distance,

  • sliders,

  • graph intersections,

  • regressions,

  • function definitions,

  • and graph comparison.


You should still understand the underlying math. But on test day, efficiency matters too.



🔥 How to Use These Predictions Before September 12


Do not try to memorize: C, 50, 16, B... College Board can change every number and still test exactly the same skill.


Instead, memorize what should go through your mind when you recognize the pattern:

Boundaries → Do I have complete sentences?

Coordinate geometry → Can Desmos give me the measurement?

Quadratic + real solutions → Think x-intercepts.

Triangle proof → Draw it and beware SSA.

Long grammar sentence → Strip it to subject + verb.

Circle equation → Remember r².

Transition placement → Which sentence owns the transition?

Equivalent expressions → Can I compare the graphs?

Pronouns → What noun is the pronoun actually replacing?

Conditional probability → What is my new denominator?


That is the kind of review that can actually transfer to a new question on September 12.



💡 Final Thoughts


These are predictions—not leaked September SAT questions and not a guarantee that all 10 topics will appear on your particular form.


But they are exactly the kinds of patterns I would want to recognize quickly before walking into the September SAT. The questions featured in the video come from the newest College Board Question Bank material, so use them to practice the strategy behind the question, not just the answer.
